In addition to an adorable, bright-eyed nine-month-old baby boy (and I am not at all biased, of course), I am also proud mom to several “babies” of the furrier variety—or, in one case…er…scalier? You see, among the counted members of my little family are a lovable and outspoken tabby, a timid but feisty calico, and an equally—and surprisingly—spirited box turtle. And as delightfully different as they each are, the thing they all have in common is that they are rescued or adopted.

There are few things closer to my heart. In fact, I have spent much of my adult life advocating for and volunteering with local animal shelters and adoption organizations. So, when our Chief Creative Officer—and fellow animal lover and advocate—Pokey Bolton announced her idea for the Festival Pet Project, I was practically giddy.

You can read about all of the details of the Project in our lead story, but the greatest reason for my giddiness…we will be selling one-of-a-kind fabric postcards, donated by artists from across the quilt world, at this year’s Quilt Festival in Houston, with all proceeds going to an animal rescue in Festival's hometown of Houston. That means that attendees will have the chance to purchase—for only $20—an original work of art AND help raise money for a worthy cause. That’s a reason to get your tail wagging!

Something else to get excited about…Quilt Festival in Houston is almost here! At present, you’ll find most members of our office, caffeine of choice in hand, busily working to prepare for the soon-to-be festivities.

Each show is a year (or often more) in the making, so you can imagine how it feels to see it all come to fruition. Just try to envision planning a party for 60,000 people! The “to-do” list can be a bit overwhelming, but getting to watch people enjoy the show makes it every bit worthwhile. (So, if you see various staff members watching the show floor from the second-floor portholes at the George R. Brown, you’ll know why!)

Happy Reading,
